Who Are The Cranes?

(Admission: I wrote this when I started the A Thousand Quilted Cranes Project back in mid-February 2013. I updated it once; I didn’t think to note when I updated it… or what exactly changed.

Admission continued: I’m updating it again on April 15, 2016, which is a few days before I finish putting the 1000 Crane Blocks together. I’m sure there will be another update as this portion of the project wraps itself up. As of today [April 15, 2016], I still don’t have 1000 people-dedications here even though the creation of the 1000 Crane blocks will soon be complete.)

Senbazuru.

That’s where it all began for me. The legend of Senbazuru and folding 1000 origami cranes, held together by string, that warrants a wish granted to the person who folded those cranes.

I chose to quilt mine.

Part of this challenge was for me to think honestly about all the people I’ve met through work, life, school, dating, etc. and remind myself that there really have been so many different people who have contributed to making me the person I am now.

I thought it would be interesting to choose what it means to have impact in someone’s life … and who those people are in mine. Yes, there are the obvious people- family first and then friends- but what about the other “random” people you interact with casually that end up making a difference?

The people I get coffee from daily? My apartment neighbor? Maybe the homeless person who smiles at me daily on my walk to work? Who are The Thousand?

If I’m going to complete this project, according to that Japanese legend, I’d have to thank 1000 people.

Seriously.

1000 people? Do I even know 1000 people? Have I met and had worthwhile interactions with 1000 people? With his project, I am challenging myself to think of those 1000 people, because I do think they exist. Or they will exist.

It’s growing more and more clear to me, as I work on- and end- this project, that I struggle  deeply and personally with fears of isolation and loneliness. I struggle deeply with insecurities about my worth and ability. Even though I try to present a very confident and out-going personality in public, I struggle to put on a face for the world to see. I’m in my late-30s now; if I said seeing an overwhelming majority of my current and past friends settled down in established relationships with growing families doesn’t discourage me, I’d be lying.

I worry. I tend to forget that there *has* been a long line of people who’ve given something to me- whether it’s their time, their knowledge, talents, jokes, friendship, work, or support. Sometimes it’s even discouragement or tough love or antagonism or hatred. Sometimes the people who aren’t good for you teach you the most about  you.

I have not been alone in this journey. I won’t be alone for the rest of it.

Originally, I was planning to mail each individual and finished Quilted Crane to a person who I wanted to acknowledge as having had some kind of impact or importance in my life. I scrapped this idea… primarily because of the financial concerns of mailing each Crane across the country- and sometimes across the world. (Quilting is expensive enough!) Besides, even though I’m fairly active on things like Facebook and with alumni groups from my college, high school, and grad school years, tracking down current mailing addresses would be difficult for 1000 different people.

So.

As I create these Cranes, I’ll document who they’re dedicated to on this page, instead of mailing them. I’ll keep the project- all 1000 pieces of it- together until it doesn’t need to be.

I’m hoping the people below won’t be offended to see their names here.

I didn’t exactly run out of people; I came up to the present moment in my life and I don’t feel I have the perspective and distance to know who to include here and who to pass over.
