Okay, so maybe I’m a little happy that I’m not in New York right now and dealing with a blizzard.
Date: January 26, 2015
Days Spent on Project: 706
Location: NW Portland, OR
Person I would have sent it to: Emily P.
When Newsies made the big (and kinda expected) transfer to Broadway in the spring of 2012, Disney Theatricals took over. One of the people brought on board to steer us into the Nederlander on 41st Street was Emily. She was brought on as the company manager to the cast and crew and making sure everyone was well and happy and getting what they needed.
I believe she had worked with Disney Theatricals before, but on a touring basis. When Newsies was gearing up, she had just landed (maybe even bought?) a small apartment on 23rd and 6th. She was busy buying things to make it her own. I remember, one afternoon, standing at her desk, in the Disney Offices on 42nd street next to the New Amsterdam, and going through rug choices online for her new place. I forget what she ended up picking.
She’s now back out on tour with The Lion King. As hard as company management is, she makes it look effortless and she takes care of the people she’s with.
Music I listened to while sewing: I just discovered the song “Outside” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding. Love it.
Thoughts/Feelings behind the block: Okay, after my weekend spent weighing the production I saw on Friday night, I have to say… I’m still thinking about it.
And a lot of other people are too, and we’re all raising the same questions.
And it is interesting that guys seem to be getting swept up in the show, saying it’s powerful… while women seem to be wondering what it’s intention is.
So, again, if it’s subversively trying to poke at male privilege, I’d say we did a good job. But I don’t think that was the intention at all, so I’m not sure we succeeded.
Okay, I’ll stop thinking about it soon; we start another show with another designer today. She’s supposedly flying into Portland from New York right now. Our actors will be arriving tonight (We’ll see how this all plays out.)
